Trailer Maintenance Tips

Those who love outdoors and love camping and boating, cannot live without their trailer- it can be a real lifesaver and perhaps your only refuge when you leave the comforts of the home. However, like all other vehicles, it does require some maintenance as well. Here are some tips that you can use to keep your trailer in perfect working order.

  • Firstly, be sure that the exterior of the trailer is well maintained. Often, leakage in the hood, faulty brakes, low pressure in the tires, poor lighting, knobby wind shields are aspects that hinder your driving. Keep the exteriors well painted at all times to prevent them from rusting- an outdoor life will expose the trailer frequently to harsh weather conditions and you need to be prepared for them.
  • The trailer is expected to traverse along pretty harsh terrain and this means that it has a strong engine. Although trailer engines are meant for long distance travel, do allow some breaks in between and allow it to cool. The same can be said about the battery which can become overheated.
  • Salt and other dirt and debris is one of the biggest enemies of trailers as they tend to intrude the bottom of the vehicle. The salt can corrode most of the major parts and the dust and dirt can simply cake on them. Be sure to clean out the trailer completely after a particular hard drive. If the salt accumulates on the cables, they can make them brittle and they might simply start chipping off.
  • The electric components of the trailer can also break down from time to time. For example, the head and tail lights can stop working due to an electrical glitch. On the other hand, the coupler and the jack should be secured to the tongue properly. You should check if the coupler is firmly sitting into the lock and passes the “lift” test.
  • Of course, you should also look into the aspect of safety and see whether all the locks of the doors and windows are shutting firmly. Double check the brakes before and long drive and whether the safety chains are all in their place.

Of course, if there is a major technical glitch in the trailer, then you will need experts to look into it. However, by looking into these few areas you will be able to avoid most minor to moderate glitches in your trailer.

Tips to Make your Car Last Longer

Your car might be one spectacular piece of engineering work, but it does need some maintenance as well. Your car will only give you lifelong service if you take certain steps to keep in good working order. Here are some things that you can do to ensure your car’s longevity:

  • Check the Battery: Apart from the fuel, the next important thing to keep your car running is the battery. The battery can at times suffer a break down if it is not checked regularly. The connection should be kept clean at all times and also check the water level from time to time. This simple task will extend the battery life by years.
  • Maintain the car brakes: Checking the brakes is not just important for your safety, but it an essential step to keep the tires in good working order. The brakes and the tires are connected by an elaborate network and a fault in them will lead to an immediate break down. Oil them for smooth functioning and check their flexibility from time to time.
  • Check the cables: There are innumerable wires and cables inside the car and some of the important ones, like the spark plug can stop a car if anything tends to go wrong with them. The cables have to checked and reinstalled if they show signs of wear and tearing. You might suddenly see your car smoking just because a cable has been loosened.
  • Clean the Exhaust System: Your car consumes a lot of fuel and after the combustion; the smoke is emitted through the exhaust pipe. This system can slowly become layered and grimy with the accumulation of the residue from the combustion and has to be cleaned on a regular basis. Or else, the residue will slowly start clogging the outlet and the smoke will start building pressure inside the car with disastrous consequences.
  • Rust Proofing: You should definitely opt for rust proofing in your car. You tend to drive through the rain and the constant pounding sends water to the most intricate nooks of the car. Now most of the parts are made from sheet metal and if water stays in contact for an extended period, the parts lowly tend to rust. It is a good idea to opt for rust proofing and that will invariably extend the lifespan of most of your car parts.

Steps To Fix Your Car’s AC

A luxury car invariably comes with an AC and it is one of the perks of having a high end car. However, there are times when the AC stops working and this could be due to a variety of reasons. While a serious break down definitely calls for professional help, there are a few things that you should know that can be done to fix your car AC.

Here is how:

Firstly, be acquainted with all the components of your car AC. Identifying the various parts will help you get a clear idea regarding where to look for when you face trouble. Apart from the compressor, there is the refrigerant, the condenser, the evaporator and the receiver. All these parts work in sync to keep your AC working. The first thing that you will notice is that the AC has stopped cooling your car and you need to remove the outer covering. If you find nothing wrong with the compressor, then you can move on to the condenser- this is the area that turns the refrigerant from gas to liquid and also helps in removing the heated air. The condenser might slow down and this can be due to accumulated grime. Clean the condenser and replace the refrigerant if you have to. You can also install a larger fan. You should tighten the fan belt accordingly and restart your AC to see if it is working.

Next, another area to look into while repairing the car’s AC is to check for leaks. The valves connecting the various components within the AC unit and connecting the unit to the rest of the car are numerous and a serious leak in any one of them will cause the pressure to fall. However, to fix most of the valves and wiring, you need to pull the AC apart. If you feel confident enough to do so, then start with checking the exterior valves. You can use a florescent liquid available in most hardware shops to do this. Once you have detected the leak, check if the valve can be dismounted from both ends and whether you will be able to put it back together and reconnect it t the unit. Replace the valve if you have to and connect it securely to the other ends. If you find that the valve is refusing to budge under your efforts, try to seek expert help.

Safe Driving Tips

It is wonderful to own a car, but driving is one passion which, if not pursued with caution, can lead to fatal consequences. Driving requires some safety measures, and here are some tips that will help you to keep yourself and others safe while out there on the road.

  • Control Speed Limit: There is a reason that there are speed limit signs on certain roads and you get a ticket if you exceed it- your own safety. Speeding is responsible for the maximum number of accidents. There is no need to overtake another car just to show off your driving skills. Set out with ample time on your hands before you have an appointment to keep so that you don’t have to end up speeding.
  • Avoid Taking Calls: Talking on the phone while driving can be very distracting and the cell phone is a bane in this regard. Of course, there are Bluetooth sets available, but the very act of talking can be distracting – your mind tends to drift from the road rules as you think about the matter being discussed. Similarly, avoid very loud music in the cars, they can also create a very distracting atmosphere.
  • Car Checking: Another reason for accidents is poor car maintenance. It is essential that you always keep your car in good working order and get it checked regularly by a known automotive repair shop. It is essential that you have a professional take a look because certain anomalies might not be noticed by a layman. Instances of frequent break downs in the middle of nowhere will reduce drastically once the car is checked. You will also be able to detect certain flaws in the car’s mechanism that could have later caused bigger problems.
  • Install Fog Lights: Snow and fogs can play havoc with driving conditions and yet there are situations when you just have to be somewhere. Install proper headlights and fog lights and use them wisely. Also, the roads tend to be slippery at such times and so you should maintain safe distance with other cars while driving so that your car does not skid and crash into them if they brake too suddenly.
  • Drive with Fresh Mind: Avoid driving if you are too tired or sleep deprived. Being drowsy while at the wheel is almost as bad as driving in a drunken state. Be sure to rest yourself before you take the wheel and hit the road.

5 common automotive repairs that can burn a hole in your pocket

Car troubles are common for most of us. These result from improper maintenance, poor manufacturing or accidents. While car’s maintenance is necessary these can actually burn a hole in your pocket. Failing to maintain your vehicle can cause damages that need expensive repairs that surpass the car’s value at times.

The most expensive car repair is considered to be the “blown motor”. Engine issues are the most common car problems. Blown engine refers to one that has suffered internal damage and requires extensive repair. A damaged valve, broken rod or leaking oil can be possible triggers for a blown engine. Engine replacement costs you the most depending on the car model, type of engine, etc. At times it is advised to get the other parts changed along with the engine. This makes it more expensive.

The second most expensive car repair is transmission replacement. Most of the times problems with the transmission fluid results in the failure of automatic transmission. The transmission fluid doesn’t require to be changed frequently, and at times it slips off the mind. This causes transmission failure. On other occasions, the fluid becomes overheated. Improper driving habits may result in failure of manual transmissions.

Third comes the head gasket, which is essential for proper engine functioning. A blown gasket results from cooling problems or manufacturing errors. Indications of blown gasket are overheated engine, white smoke from exhaust pipe, coolant leakage, etc.

The fourth most expensive car repair is that of the air conditioning compressor. The air compressor allows the air to cool down inside the car. A broken rod or valve can result in the malfunctioning of the air compressor. The engine belt can also cause ripple effect that makes the compressor to malfunction.

The car’s suspension is an important aspect that doesn’t come in notice when everything’s working fine. It’s the suspension that doesn’t let you feel the bumps on the road. The suspension system is made up of different parts that include springs, shocks, control arm, struts and tie rods. Generally only one set of these parts need to be replaced in case of any damage, but at times a complete overhaul needs to be done. This is when the pocket pinch becomes huge.

All the above mentioned car damages also require a lot of labour which results in increase of the cost.
